Drawing Numbering System

One challenge that nearly every architectural practice eventually faces is developing a logical and scalable drawing numbering system.
The system must work equally well for small residential projects and for large institutional developments involving multiple buildings, stages and sites.

Vektors has developed a structured Drawing Numbering System based on the US National CAD Standard (USNCS) and refined for Australian practice.

The system introduces a clear hierarchy for stage, discipline, drawing type and level, while remaining compact enough to be practical in day-to-day production.

Special consideration is given to local conventions such as Lower Ground versus Level 1, as well as the later introduction of plant levels, podium levels and additional basement levels.

At the same time, the numbering structure has been simplified to maintain short drawing numbers (7 digits) for efficient cross-referencing in markers, callouts and schedules.

The result is a numbering system that remains readable, scalable and production-ready across projects of any size.
